Discover our new Polyripstop fabric: a rip-resistant, waterproof, and breathable fabric
If you don’t know this fabric, here is short a description of it: a 100% polyester technical fabric that is extremely lightweight and featuring Ripstop structure. This is a soft and cool fabric that feels very comfortable on the skin, which you can use to sew sports garments (jackets, raincoats, waterproofs), and even covers and linings for bags and backpacks.
What are Ripstop fabrics?
Ripstop is developed with a special technical fabric, where all threads are woven together. Thicker threads are woven into a thinner fabric, making this a really rip-resistant fabric.
Polyripstop characteristics
Polyripstop’s main feature is its rip-resistant quality. Its grid weave design prevents the fabric from ripping completely, so if it does break, it stops right after the cell where the rip starts. Polyripstop includes the following features:
- Lightweight
- Resistant
- Waterproof
- Breathable
- Durable

6 tips to sew with Polyripstop
Take note of these recommendations to easily sew this fabric:
- Choose the right needle. To sew ultralight technical fabrics like Polyripstop, it’s important to use a sharp and thin needle to prevent damaging the fabric. A 70/80 universal needle is a good choice.
- Choose the right thread: You should use a good quality thread that is strong and resistant. Polyester or nylon thread is an excellent option for this fabric.
- Adjust your sewing machine: Before starting to sew, always test and adjust your thread tension and stitch length. With more thread tension and a stitch length of 3 or 4 you will achieve a good result.
- Prepare your fabric: It’s important to prepare your fabric before starting to sew. Wash and dry it to prevent the fabric from warping after sewing. Wash at 30ºC without bleach and do not tumble dry. It’s also important to not iron it. If you have to iron seams, do so at a low temperature or under a cloth.
- Use thin pins or clips to hold your pieces together and prevent them from leaving marks on the fabric.
- Sew the fabric carefully using a straight stitch and avoid pulling on the fabric while sewing.
With these simple steps, you can sew this fabric well and achieve a durable and resistant garment.
