Planned Pooling Top by Wilmade: Tips and video tutorial to crochet a top with Katia Magic Diamonds

12 November, 2020

Hi! I´m Wilma, a crochet designer from the Netherlands. Crochet started as a hobby during my Christmas break in 2014, but soon turned into more. In 2015, I started my blog Wilmade.com on which I share free crochet patterns. In 2018, I quit my job as a communication & PR officer to become a full-time designer. I´m sharing this passion with my mom who also designs crochet patterns. My granny and sister often model my designs and my husband and dad help to take pictures. It´s a real family business! I usually make shawls and hats, but lately I´ve discovered the joy of making garments. When I saw Katia Magic Diamonds, I fell in love and decided to make a simple top with the planned pooling technique. Below you can find my video tutorial for a crochet top made with Katia Magic Diamonds in size S up to 5XL.

Planned Pooling Top

Planned Pooling Top

This top is made with Katia Magic Diamonds, a special yarn that can be used for planned pooling. Planned pooling is a technique where you change the color order by adding or removing a stitch at the end of a row. So basically all you have to do, is work single crochet stitches and the yarn will automatically create a beautiful diamond effect. This pattern is very simple and perfect for beginners. The top is made out of 2 identical rectangles which are sewn together on the sides and shoulders. You can use Katia Merino Aran to make the sleeves. They are joined in the armhole and worked in continues rounds with single crochet stitches. Yep, the entire top is made with single crochet stitches!

Level: Intermediate

Size: S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL

Materials

Stitches & abbreviations (US terms)

  • st: stitch
  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet

Gauge: 13 sc stitches x 16 rows equal 4″ x 4″ / 10 x 10 cm

Tips

  • Each color section should be 9 sc. Optionally you can change your hook size. For example, if you get 10 sc per color, change to hook size 7 mm until you get 9 sc. If you get 8 sc per color, size down such as 5 mm hook.
  • If you want to change the length, make sure you’ll work with a multiple of 9 minus 1 (e.g. 44, 53, 62, 71, 80). 9 stitches equals 2.5″.
