How to sew a gift bag for your Christmas presents 🎄 Step-by-step sewing tutorial

Are you already planning your Christmas gifts? Here’s a tutorial how to sew a gift bag. This is a really quick and easy project; you can make it in an afternoon. Christmas bags are a special detail to give your Christmas presents a handmade vibe.

I’m Xènia, I love sewing and handcrafts in general. When I became a mother eight years ago, I became interested in sewing. There were so many beautiful fabrics on the market that I took the plunge. I taught myself how to sew by looking for tutorials online, on social media, so today I do the same thing to help and motivate people who want to learn how to sew.

How to sew a gift bag

This is a simple sewing project suitable for all levels, to sew bags to sustainably wrap our Christmas presents this holiday season, because the wrapping is also important, don’t you agree? You will be able to sew several of them, because this project won’t take you more than 15 minutes. Shall we begin?

As a guide, the Christmas bag in the photo measures 25 cm x 15 cm.

Materials

• Canvas fabric: Canvas Slim Xmas Tree
• T-shirt jersey fabric: Jersey Solid Colors Kaki
• Cord or ribbon
• Thread that matches the fabric

Notions

• Scissors
• Pins
• Iron
• Sewing machine
• Ruler, pencil, and paper

Sewing a gift bag

Before you do anything, wash and iron the fabrics before starting the project.

Cut out the pieces:

• Cut 2 squares of the green fabric measuring 15 cm high by 15 cm wide
• and 2 rectangles of print canvas measuring 10 cm high by 15 cm wide.

All the pieces include seam allowance.

Place the print fabric and plain fabric with right sides facing each other and sew as indicated in the photo. Take care of the direction of the motif!

Next, place both pieces facing each other, matching up the seams and sew along all the sides except for the top.

Hem the top.

Cut the corners and turn the project right side out.

Our bag is ready!

Now you just have to fill it and tie it with a pretty cord or ribbon.

To decorate it we can add labels or natural or Christmassy decorative objects. For example, I’ve used dehydrated orange slices, pinecones, branches, bells…

How to make a fabric label

To add a finishing touch, I’m going to show you how to make a label with the same fabric. Cut out your favorite tree from the fabric, add a grommet to the top, and you’re all set! Tie it to the bag and it’s ready for gifting.

Another kind of label is this tree made with plain fabric sewn to a piece of card.
