For this project, we have the help of @akukuna_diy, who has designed this free sewing pattern and a detailed tutorial specifically for this bomber-style jacket.

“My name is Sonia Cepa from @akukuna. I have been a pattern designer for more than 20 years.

Since then, I have worked with companies in the sector, fashion brands, handmade brands, and on all kinds of projects; as a designer, pattern designer and maker of many things, including my own sustainable children’s clothing brand, Akukuna.

Since 2017, I give in-person sewing and pattern design classes as well as themed workshops.
In 2019, I created a line of digital sewing patterns for all skill levels. I currently work on digital training, creating online courses for sewing and pattern design fans at akukuna.com.”

Materials needed:

SizesAmount of fabric by the meter
36, 38, and 401.50 m of fabric
42, 44 and 461.65 m of fabric
48, 50 and 521.80 m of fabric
  • 30 cm of contrasting fabric. For this sample I have used Rustic Cotton in Lime color for the pocket lining and for finishing off the inside of the zipper.
  • Matching thread. For this sample, I have combined a single thread and thick thread for the stitching.
  • 55-cm or 60-cm zipper, depending on the size chosen.
  • Zipper presser foot.
  • 35-mm wide elastic. Centimeters needed according to our wrist and hip circumferences.

  • If you want to line it, you’ll need the same amount of lining fabric.

How to make a women’s bomber jacket

  1. Download the free pattern: print it out and stick it together following the instructions.
  2. Cut your fabric: Use the pattern to cut out all the necessary pieces. Remember to transfer all the notches from the pattern to the fabric.

Step 1: Sew the pockets

  1. Place the pocket pieces with right sides facing each other. Sew them leaving an opening at the bottom to turn them right side out later.

Place the pockets at the desired height and sew them leaving the top folded.

Step 2: Prepare the sleeves

  1. Place the front and back sleeve pieces with right sides facing each other and sew the outside seam.
  2. Then, backstitch along the right side with thick thread to create the visible seam.

Repeat for the other sleeve.

Step 3: Join the sleeves to the body

  1. Place the front body and the front of the sleeve with right sides facing each other.
  2. Sew along the length of the armhole.
  3. Repeat for the other sleeve and front.
  4. Do the same, but with the back body and the back sleeve pieces. Once sewn, they should look like this:

Also backstitch along the right side of the armholes with thick thread.

Step 4: Sew the sides and the hem

  1. Sew the sides, from the sleeve to the hem.

Sew the hem piece of the body of the jacket with right sides facing each other.

Step 5: How to sew the zipper

So that it’s easier to sew the zipper, we recommend using a zipper presser foot.

Prepare the band

  1. Fold and sew the curved section of the zipper band.
  2. Then turn it right side out and backstitch along the right side.

Right zipper

  1. Put the band in place, on top of the zipper. As well as a piece to conceal the inside of the zipper. Create a sandwich with the band, the zipper, and the zipper lining.
  2. Finish off the zipper lining on the inside by hemming and backstitching.
  3. Fold the bottom like so.
  4. Fold the bottom toward the jacket, making a hem to conceal the seam.

Left zipper

  1. Sew the zipper and a piece on top to conceal the zipper on the inside of the garment.
  2. Fold the lining and backstitch over it.

Step 6: Hem the jacket

  1. Fold the bottom toward the jacket, making a hem to conceal the seam.
  2. Run the elastic along the inside of the hem.
  3. Sew down the elastic at each end to attach it to the hem, around 8 cm from the center. En cada extremo del bajo
  4. Then sew along the entire hem.

Step 7: How to sew the cuffs

Prepare the cuffs

  1. Fold the cuffs and sew the ends together.
  2. Turn the cuff and fold in half.

Sew the cuffs to the jacket sleeve

  1. Sew the cuffs along the inside of the sleeve.
  2. Then turn them inside out and backstitch, leaving an opening to insert the elastic.
  3. Insert the elastic into the cuff and close the opening.

Step 8: How to sew the neckline

Prepare the neckline

  1. Sew the neckline along the top of the piece.
  2. Once sewn, cut out notches along the curved edge.
  3. Turn the neckline right side out and iron well.

Sew the neckline to the body of the jacket

  1. Sew one side of the neckline along the wrong side of the garment.
  2. Finish off the other side and hem with backstitch.

After sewing the neckline, it should look like this.

And that’s all! Now you have a uniquely fashionable bomber jacket, perfect for any season. You haven’t just made an incredible piece, you have also improved your sewing skills.
