We introduce you Family & Katia Fabrics: Gemma Recasens and her first contact with sewing:
Hi! My name is Gemma. I live in Barcelona where I am happily married to Pol and the mother of three beautiful children. I am also a lover of all the small details that make life so wonderful. I work in marketing for a large multinational consumer goods company. My great passions are my children, my family, my friends, reading, Yoga and DIY.
At present I am enjoying my maternity leave after the birth of my third child. This professional break has allowed me to dedicate myself 100% to my children. Re-evaluate a lot of things about our daily lives. And to reinvent myself as a mother, wife and a professional.
I am a frequent user of Social Media, but I try to never use it in front of my children. I am more and more aware of the importance of dedicating quality time to those who are closest to me. My children are prioritised. Which is why I give them all the attention in the world when I’m with them. I try to educate them with values, love and curiosity for everything that surrounds them.
The value of things
For me, it is fundamental that they are conscious of the value of things. Question the society in which we live and are respectful of our environment.
Regarding this last point, up until now we have limited ourselves to doing our bit by carrying out small daily gestures. short showers, turning the tap off whilst cleaning our teeth, not wasting food or turning the lights off when leaving a room.
However, little by little we have been taking greater steps to learn about the origins, history and processing of the products that we use on a daily basis. As a result of this we have changed a large amount of the products that used to occupy our shelves. Now we buy self-serve loose foods instead of packaged and bottled items. And also endeavour to buy locally produced products whenever possible.
These changes have also arrived in our wardrobes. I have to admit that I used to really enjoy going shopping. I would fill my wardrobe with garments, so much so that they were lucky if they got worn on more than two occasions. These days I try to stick to the necessities and take an interest in where and how my clothing has been produced. I have fewer garments, but special ones, the kind that make you feel wonderful when you are wearing them. As a consequence of all of this, I was absolutely thrilled to discover the world of Katia Fabrics.
Family & Katia Fabrics
I’ve always been passionate about DIY. I like doing all kinds of handicrafts. I adore cooking, crochet, decorating and also oil painting. But there was something that I’d always resisted: I had never used a sewing machine in my life, or made a piece of clothing. So I launched myself into it with the marvellous Katia fabrics. When I received the box I was overcome with emotion when I saw the beautiful prints and the wonderful fabric. But to be honest, I wasn’t at all sure if I would be able to understand the patterns or the resulting garments.
Gemma Recasens and her first contact with sewing
A tiny set for Bru was my first sewing. As I worked little by little with a lot of enthusiasm, energy and determination to do and undo the mistakes when necessary, I surprised myself by how well the garments were turning out. Following the kit patterns was a lot easier than I had thought. You cannot imagine how happy I was when I finished the first garment from the set!
The first garment was the little hat, which was the piece that seemed easiest to me, and I had it finished in no time at all. It was so adorable and I put it on Bru straight away without being able to resist taking hundreds of photos of him. The next garment also proved to be much easier than I thought, and in less than a few hours I had finished some awesome little trousers. The feet were a little difficult to manage, and I nearly decided not to sew them on, but I did finally triumph and I could not have been more satisfied with the results.
I finally sewed the t-shirt. I have repeated the pattern with different fabrics and now have various beautiful sets for Bru.
It has been a wonderful experience that made me feel happy throughout the whole process, but above all with the final results. I love opening up the kid’s wardrobe and seeing clothes which have been made by me. Clothes which are full of love, and some mistakes, but remain special, unique pieces full of life with a story behind them.
You know Family & Katia Fabrics
Katia Fabrics has introduced me to a fantastic new world, and encouraged me to throw myself into this previously unknown territory that I could never leave now. My aim for 2019 is to keep sewing clothes for my children and to have my eyes light up with joy every time I open their wardrobe to ensure that they have just enough comfortable, awesome, special garments that have been, most importantly of all…. made with lots and lots of love.
