Valentine’s Day Tufting Bag step-by-step instructions
1. Stretch out the fabric on the frame and trace the design
First, print the heart template to be able to trace it onto the fabric. You can also draw hearts using a projector, or free hand or cut out each part of the template on paper. After tracing the outline onto the fabric, write the initials of the color that goes in each section to avoid mistakes when tufting.
💕 On this large frame, you can make two handbags, so make a matching one for your partner or friends.
⚠️ The projector can distort the image and it’s really important for both parts to be the same.
2. Get your tufting gun ready to paint with yarn
Since you’re using Katia Tufter, just insert one strand of it into the tufting gun, because this yarn is already thick enough.
TIP 📌 Try to work slowly across the outline so that it’s nice and dense.
3. Glue the back with liquid latex
Once you’ve filled in the entire outline with yarn, glue the back without going outside of the edges of the design. Leave it to dry overnight.
TIP 📌 Preferably use liquid latex because it is odorless. You can also use glue for carpets.
4. Cut out the pieces and remove them from the frame
When the glue is completely dry, remove the pieces from the frame by cutting about two centimeters around the edge of the design.
5. Define the edges
Using the scissors, make cuts (up to the yarn) in the excess fabric every 3 cm. Then, fold it inwards and glue it with silicone.
6. Shear to even out and outline the colors
Run the shearing machine across the pieces to even them out and outline the colors to further define each heart. Outlining takes a lot of practice, so it’s optional and can also be done with scissors if you prefer. Leave outlining the edges of the pieces until last.
TIP 📌 To outline like a PRO, place the shearing machine diagonally in the center between two colors: shear one color first and then the other.
Assembly and finishing touches
7. Handbag lining
For the lining, use the template to cut out two pieces of felt in the shape of a heart.
🧷 If you prefer, you can line your Valentine’s Day Tufting Bag with your favorite fabric color or print from Katia Fabrics.
Next, sew both parts by hand or machine. First, with a straight stitch and then with a zigzag stitch along the edge.
⚠️ Remember to leave an opening at the top corresponding to the bag opening-closure.
8. Fastening ribbon
Cut two lengths of ribbon measuring 25 cm with one end cut diagonally.
TIP 📌 To prevent them from fraying, carefully burn the ends of the ribbon.
Next, sew a piece of ribbon to the center of each felt heart.
9. Assembly
Use hot silicone to glue the edges of the lining to the back of each of the tufted pieces, and then glue each of these together.
⚠️ Apply the silicone slowly and press the pieces together so that they are attached all the way around. This is the slowest step, be patient!
Once you’ve joined all the pieces together, use scissors to even out the edges of the bag, both the excess felt along the opening (if necessary) and the wool surface.
10. Bag strap
Using a punch needle or knitting needle, pierce a hole through all the layers of the bag to be able to attach the karabiners.
Lastly, attach the chain strap to each karabiner and fasten the bag with a cute bow.
