Scrap crochet hat made with yarn leftovers

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions and start 2026 accomplishing your stash-busting goal. Each Scrap Hat is unique!

Materials needed

To make this Scrap Hat, all you need are some basic crochet notions and whatever waste yarn you already have. Itziar at La Casa Atelier used the following materials:

  • 4.5-mm crochet hook
  • Leftover yarn: Concept Dama in yellow (96), Concept Cotton-Yak in turquoise (131), Concept Cotton-Merino in burgundy (125), Katia Baby Nature in mauve (114) and Concept United Socks & More in white (1)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

DIY tutorial for beginners

1. Starting chain. Chain 44 stitches.

2. Row 1. Half-double crochet to the end of the row.

3. Turn the work. Chain 2 to turn.

📌 TIP 💡 Count how many stitches you have at the end of each row if you are starting out. It is easy to miss one without realizing.

4. Textured stitch. Continue working in half-double crochet back loop only.

5. Make a rectangle. Work 48 rows or until you have a rectangle that measures approximately 51 × 30 cm.

📌 TIP 💡 If you have thinner yarns, hold them together to create texture. I held the yellow with another thicker yarn and it turned out great.

6. Seam the side. Join the sides using slip stitch. Leave a tail of around 30 cm to weave in.

7. Close the top. Use a tapestry needle to draw the top of the hat closed.

8. Finishing touches. Turn the hand inside out so that the seam is on the inside. And done!

This has seen-on-Pinterest vibes, but with the satisfaction of making it yourself, with your yarn, your hands and at your own pace.
