What are yarns for felting like?

Not all yarns react in the same way to heat, moisture and friction. If you want to make a felted project, look for untreated virgin wool. Our three new Katia products are a singles-style 100% untreated virgin wool which are perfect for knitting first and then felting.

This type of yarn also allows you to experiment with other felting techniques, like needle felting, to create little details and appliqués.

Katia Azteca Felting Wool

If you love the color effect of Katia Azteca, try the felting version. Azteca Felting Wool is a 100% untreated virgin wool singles yarn available in 6 multicolor colorways. After felting, the fabric becomes compact and resistant while preserving a fun colorway.

Ideal for felted handbags, hats and slippers.

WOW Granny

WOW Granny is a yarn with the perfect color cycle to create a large multicolor granny square measuring 37 x 37 cm using a single ball. This is where it gets its name from. But the possibilities go beyond crochet. Since it is 100% untreated virgin wool, you can also knit it and felt the piece later to make felted accessories with surprising color effects.

📌 To achieve more uniform felting, we recommend knitting.

Tips for felting wool in the washing machine

The fun starts when a seemingly too large knitted piece goes into the washing machine and shrinks when it comes out.

To felt Katia projects:

  • Wash the piece for 1 hour at 40 ºC.

  • Spin at 800 rpm.

  • Do not add detergent or softener.

  • Place a towel in the drum to increase the friction.

  • At the end, shape the piece while it is still damp.

  • Let it dry flat.

💡 Keep in mind that the result may vary according to your gauge, the stitch used and your washing machine. If you need to control the final measurements, first make a gauge swatch and measure how much it shrinks after felting.
