3 essential fabrics for your handmade projects 🧵
Working with felt, jute and washable craft paper allows you to combine texture, volume and staying power with accessible techniques and polished results. Here is a quick guide on how to choose them and make the most of all their potential in your sewing projects.
100% recycled felt
Its matte and uniform surface makes contours stand out and provides a clean finish. It is stable, does not fray and keeps its shape well, so it allows you to cut it with precision and create defined layers. It can be sewn or glued, and looks particularly good when combining several colors.
✅ Quick tip: cut it directly with scissors, without finishing the edges. Use an 80/90 universal needle. Reinforce pieces by doubling them up to add more body and combine them with other materials to create contrast.
Jute burlap
A rustic texture with an organic look that provides immediate warmth. Its visible weave and firm feel create volume without sacrificing flexibility. The natural shades of jute go well with cotton straps, leather, or contrasting bias and suit both neutral palettes and accent colors.
✅ Quick tip: use an 100/16 universal needle and a 3–3.5-mm straight stitch. Cut using a cutter and ruler for clean edges and prevent it from fraying by applying a thin zigzag stitch or textile glue. For weight-bearing pieces, add a lining or interfacing.
Washable craft paper
It looks like paper but behaves like fabric: lightweight, resistant and with memory. You can wrinkle it slightly for a casual look or keep it smooth for a more polished finish. It takes folded seams, long stitches and trims well; it is also easy to clean and holds its structure with little weight.
✅ Quick tip: sew with a 90/14 or 100/16 needle, a long stitch length (3–3.5 mm) and use clips instead of pins to avoid making holes in the fabric. The edges do not fray; leave them raw or fold over for a firmer finish.
Christmas decorations with a handmade soul ✨
The felt, jute and washable craft paper fabrics by Katia Fabrics are ideal to make your own decorations this holiday season: warm, textured and structured materials that highlight each layer, fold and detail. Choose a palette of 2-3 shades, combine matte and rustic surfaces and add simple finishing touches (ribbons, labels or little bells) to turn your ideas into unique pieces. Because you can also sew Christmas magic: stitches full of love and style.
