How to make a reusable snack bag

Whether for school, work, or to carry snacks on the go, we know you’ll enjoy this free pattern and tutorial video for easy eco-friendly reusable snack bags. You can use food-grade plastic materials to sew many kinds of food wrappers which will help to avoid using disposable options.

Sew these snack bags in less than 30 minutes! This is an easy project, perfect for beginners.

Materials you will need:

Fabric

  • To make the small bag, you will need 3 rectangles, each measuring 9 ¾’’ x 6’’ (25 cm x 15 cm) (1 food-grade plastic, 1 printed, 1 plain)
  • To make the velcro bag, you will need 3 rectangles, each measuring 17 ¾’’ x 8’’ (45 cm x 20 cm)  (1 food-grade plastic, 1 printed, 1 plain) and 15 cm of Velcro

An 80/90 universal needle

  • Make sure that all the pieces are correctly cut and clipped  if using food-grade plastic material: the sewing machine needle will leave a mark that can’t be removed.
  • Also, avoid using pins so as to not leave marks if using this material; use plastic clips or wooden pegs instead.

Follow our video tutorial or the written instructions below.

Small Bag - Step-by-step instructions

  1. Cut 3 triangles (1 for each piece of fabric), each measuring 9 ¾’’ x 6’’ (25 cm x 15 cm)
  2. Place the printed fabric with the right side facing up, place the food-grade plastic on top, and the plain fabric last. Sew the edges, leaving an unsewn edge to turn it inside out.
  3. Turn the bag inside out, iron the seams. And close the opening. Backstitch along the bottom and top of the bag.
  4. At the top, mark 2’’ (5 cm) and fold along that mark. Fold the bottom up towards the top again. Sew along the sides. The right side of the fabric should be on the inside of the bag.
  5. Turn the bag inside out, push the corners out.

Velcro Bag - Step-by-step instructions

  1. Cut 3 triangles (1 for each piece of fabric), each measuring 17 ¾’’ x 8’’ (45 cm x 20 cm)
  2. Place the printed fabric with the right side facing up, place the food-grade plastic on top, and the plain fabric last. Sew along the top to join the three fabrics.
  3. Iron the seams and sew the Velcro to the outer fabric ¾’’ (2 cm) from the seam you’ve just made.
  4. Fold the bag and use the iron to mark where you want the bag flap to go. Once you’ve folded the bag as you like, take just the outer fabric, and pull it towards the top. Leave the plastic and plain fabric folded.
  5. Sew the bag along the sides. Turn it around and make a ⅖’’ (1-cm) hem at the top to make a visible seam and close the bag.
  6. Lastly, sew the Velcro to the plastic.

Your snack bags are ready to use again and again. The planet says thank you!
