22 sts x 9 rows = 10x10cm or 4”x4”

Pattern instructions

The Livia Top consists of 5 sections:

  • Back. A square with 2 more rows so that it stands out slightly.
  • Fronts. Two identical rectangles.
  • Sleeves. Worked directly onto the body in the round.

Measurements and calculations

  • Measurement A or desired length of the top from shoulder to waist.
  • Measurement B or bust circumference + 10 cm of ease.
  • The sample shown in photos has the following measurements:
    • 48 cm long (A)
    • 90 + 10 = 100 cm circumference (B)

To adapt the pattern to your size

  1. Take measurements A and B
  2. 2. Make a 10×10 cm gauge swatch and count the number of stitches and rows
  3. Make the following calculations:
    • Back.
      • Width or number of stitches = [(Measurement B ÷ 2) × No. of stitches in Swatch] ÷10
      • Height or number of rows = (Measurement A × No. of rows in Swatch) ÷ 10
      • Calculations with Almudena’s measurements and swatch:
        • Calculations with Almudena’s measurements and swatch: Width: [(100÷ 2) × 22] ÷ 10 = 110 stitches.
        • Height: (48 × 9) ÷ 10 = 43.2 = 43 rows (rounded down).
    • Fronts.
      • Width or No. of stitches = (No. of stitches for Back ÷ 5) × 2
      • Height or No. of rows = No. of rows for Back- 2= 41
      • Calculations with Almudena’s measurements and swatch:
        • Width: (110 ÷ 5) × 2 = 44 stitches which are rounded up to 46 stitches.
        • Height: 43 – 2 = 41 rows
    • Notes:
      • The number of stitches always needs to be a multiple of 4 + 2.
      • You must work an odd number of rows, because you work 3 rows in sc to start on the RS.

In this chart, there is a sequence of double crochet and chain stitches you need to work:

At the end of this post, there’s a tip to learn how to replace the 3 chains up for a faux double crochet stitch.

Note: The underlined numbers are the ones you need to replace for your own.

Back

Ch109 + ch3 up and start in the 4th ch from the hook.

Row 1: dc1, *ch2, sk2, dc2*, repeat from * to * to end, ch3 (counts as 1 st) and turn.

Row 2-43: repeat Row 1. On Row 43 ch1 up (doesn’t count as st) instead of ch3 up.

Row 44-45: sc to end, ch1 and turn.

Row 46: sc to end and cut yarn.

Fronts (x2)

Ch45 + ch3 up and start in the 4th ch from the hook:

Row 1: dc1, *ch2, sk2, dc2*, repeat from * to * to end, ch3, and turn.

Row 2-41: repeat Row 1. On Row 41 ch1 up (doesn’t count as st) instead of ch3 up.

Row 42-43: sc to end, ch1 and turn.

Row 44: sc to end and cut yarn.

Join back and fronts

  1. Graft the shoulders together (see video at end of article to learn how to do it).
  2. Try on the top and mark the armhole with stitch markers, safety pins, waste yarn…
  3. Graft the sides together from the marker downward, leaving a slit at the end for a split hem.
    • The Livia Top by Almudena is joined at the sides from row 21 to 35 (counting from the top) and the armhole goes from row 1 to 20.

Edges

  1. Back. with the RS of the back facing you, work two rows of sc and one row of rsc along the bottom edge of the top.
  2. Fronts. Do the same from the right corner of the left front, going up to the neckline to move onto the right front, then go down and end on the left corner.

Sleeves

With RS facing, work in the round directly on the armhole.

Insert the crochet hook into a st in the armhole and ch3 up. Continue as follows:

Round 1: dc1, ch2, sk space corresponding to 2 sts, *dc2, ch2*, repeat from * to * to end, close the round with sl st 1 into the 3rd ch up, ch3, and turn.

In this chart, you can see (in purple) where to work the sleeve sts for Round 1.

Rounds 2–5: Repeat Round 1. On Round 5, ch1 up and turn.

Rounds 6–7: sc 1 into each st, sl st 1 to close the round, ch1 and turn.

Round 8: rsc 1 into each st, sl st 1 to close the round, and cut yarn.
