My name is Laura Carmona Sanjuán, I am 28 years old and I come from Cordoba, with a Cordovan father and a Gallician mother, although I actually live in Barcelona. I’ve always considered myself to be passionate about handicrafts and ever since I was small I’ve liked drawing, photography and other creative activities.

I have a degree in Business Administration and Management. During the last two years of my degree I began to work in the accounts department of a family business. In the afternoons I dedicated my time to crocheting like a crazy thing and to share content on ‘Sweet and Knit’, my previous blog. Back then I only published sweet recipes (I love cooking) and a few sewing projects. Little by little I started to create crochet projects and these started to generate interest amongst my followers. They were always asking where they could find the materials used, which were difficult to find for many of them. That’s when I opened my own online shop, where I also share my patterns with the rest of the world.

I worked and studied in the mornings and dedicated my afternoons to looking for suppliers, creating content for the blog and giving form to my website starting from scratch (with a lot of sweat and self learning). And so, after a few months and a lot of effort, that’s how Susimiu was born.

Polar Waistcoat @susimiu

I first touched a ball of Katia Polar at the Makevolution event that Katia organized in Barcelona. I had seen it online before and I have to admit that I instantly fell in love with it. I’d never touched such a soft fibre for working with. I thought it was the perfect texture, and at the same time innovative, for a winter garment. That’s why I chose it for my project.

Its texture reminds me of the Animal Print coats and waistcoats that are so popular at the moment. That’s why I took inspiration from them to make a long waistcoat using this material. I think it’s a very wearable garment. I chose black because it’s a colour that goes with everything and the final result is beautiful and elegant.
