What would Halloween be without the customary pumpkin? Well, we think we have something even better than the real thing… sewing your own bespoke fabric ones! You can arrange these pumpkin ornaments wherever and however you want to decorate your home with the enchanting aesthetic that’s so unique to Halloween.

Follow this super simple guide and video to learn how to hand sew these pumpkin accessories which you can use again and again. Say goodbye to plastic one-use decorations!

The scariest part about this Halloween sewing project is how easy and quick it is to do!

The materials you will need to complete this project are:

• Fabric - we suggest using two different types: one for the main pumpkin shape and another for the stem. It’s important that the fabric for your stem is stretchy
• Sewing thread 
• Sewing needle
• Filling
• Pins
• Thimble

How to make your Halloween pumpkin decorations

The main shape

1. Cut a square of fabric (the size depends on how big you want your pumpkin to be)
2. Fold the fabric in half and then half again to create a smaller square shape
3. Across the open-sided part of the folded fabric cut a curve from corner to corner 
4. Open out to reveal a circle
5. Sew approximately 1 cm from the edge all the way around
6. Once you’ve reached the end pull the thread to gather the fabric
7. Stuff with filling 
8. Sew the closing with a few stitches
9. Take the thread, wrap it around the underside of the pumpkin and thread it through the center (bottom to top) to create the ribbed effect
10. Repeat approximately 6 times and close off with a couple of stitches at the top

    The details

11. Take another color thread to sew the ‘face’ details (a great simple idea is two crosses for the eyes and a stitch-design or a zigzag for the mouth)
12. Cut a rectangle of fabric in the color you want for the stem
13. Stretch out the fabric lengthways several times so it becomes easy to roll
14. Roll it, fold it in half, and sew approximately three stitches at the fold to keep the shape
15. Sew the stem to the top of the pumpkin (make the stitches in the fold)
