You can make it for yourself or as a gift together with that very special book.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/funda-libro.jpg?resize=600%2C338&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162428\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">How to sew a book cover<\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">For this tutorial you are going to need the following <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">materials<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/poplin-fabric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exterior fabric: Poplin<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/poplin-fabric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interior fabric: Printed poplin<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Wadding (if you want it to be soft and spongy) or thick interlining (if you want it to be thinner)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Fine sewing interfacing<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Sewing thread in the same colour as the fabrics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/materiales-coser-funda-libro-600x349.jpg?resize=600%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"materiales-funda-libro\" class=\"wp-image-7206\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">And the following tools:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Scissors or a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Measuring tape<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Pencil &amp; paper<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Pins<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Thread cutters<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Marker<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Cut the pieces<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">The first thing you must do is to measure the height, width, and depth of your book and write down the measurements.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/medidas-libro-600x338.png?resize=600%2C338&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"medidas libro\" class=\"wp-image-7227\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Once you have the measurements, add a 3\/8&#8243; (1 cm) seam allowance (if you are using thick wadding or sew-in stabilising foam, you can add a 5\/8&#8243; (1.5 cm) seam allowance to avoid it ending up too small).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Example: If the book measures 7 1\/8&#8243; (18cm) wide, 3\/4&#8243; (2cm) deep and 9&#8243; (23cm) high<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">After adding 3\/8\u201d(1cm) to the book contour you will have a piece measuring: 3\/8&#8243;+ 7 1\/8&#8243;+ 3\/4&#8243;+7 1\/8&#8243; + 3\/8&#8243; = <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>15 3\/4&#8243;<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> X 3\/8\u201d+ 9&#8243;+ 3\/8&#8243;= <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>9 3\/4&#8243;<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> (1+ 18+2+18+1 =40cm X 1+23+1=25cm)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">You need to cut the following pieces:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/corte-patrones-600x349.jpg?resize=600%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"corte-patrones\" class=\"wp-image-7210\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Main pattern:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Exterior fabric 1 piece<br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Interior fabric 1 piece<br><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">1 piece of wadding or interlining<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Flap pattern:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">You must measure the height so it is the same as the main piece, and make it twice the width you want it to be. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;<span lang=\"en-GB\">2 pieces in the exterior fabric<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">2 pieces of half of the pattern in the fine interlining <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">For the handles, you will need:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">2 rectangles which are twice the width of the size you want, plus seam allowances<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">2 rectangles of half of the pattern width in wadding or the thick interfacing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Making the book cover<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">First sew the handles. Fold and iron the 3\/8&#8243; (1 cm) seam allowances on the long sides inwards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/coser-asas-libro-600x349.jpg?resize=600%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"coser asas libro\" class=\"wp-image-7209\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Place the wadding or thick interfacing on one of the handle pieces and close with pins as shown in the photo. Work a row of machine stitching close to the open edge. Iron and put to one side.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/asas-libro-600x344.jpg?resize=600%2C344&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"asas del libro\" class=\"wp-image-7222\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Attach the interlining with the heat of the iron on one half of the wrong sides of each flap. Fold in half, with wrong sides together, and leave ironed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/entretela-solapas-600x349.jpg?resize=600%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"entretela solapas\" class=\"wp-image-7211\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Now make the main piece. Place the wadding on top of the wrong side of the exterior fabric and place with the right side facing upwards. Then position the handles centrally, as shown in the following photo, using pins. Leave a distance of around 3 7\/8&#8243; (10 cm) between them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/montaje-capas-funda-600x349.jpg?resize=600%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"montaje capas funda\" class=\"wp-image-7214\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Now attach the flaps and secure firmly with pins. Work a row of stitching at each side to hold down the handles and the flaps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Finally, place the interior and exterior fabrics together, with right sides facing. Pin all around the outer edges to hold in place. Sew all around the edges, except for an opening of approximately 2 3\/4&#8243;-3 7\/8&#8243; \/ (7-10 cm) which will be used to turn the book cover through to the right side.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/cerrar-pieza-600x344.jpg?resize=600%2C344&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cerrar pieza\" class=\"wp-image-7215\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Trim the corners with scissors and turn the work to the right side through the opening. Iron and close the opening with a row of machine stitching close to the edge, or hand sew using an invisible stitch.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dar-vuelta-funda-600x344.jpg?resize=600%2C344&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"vuelta funda libro\" class=\"wp-image-7216\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\"> You can work a row of stitching around the whole contour of the cover so it is more stable. If you do this, bear in mind when taking the book measurements that the seam allowances must be slightly bigger to allow for the top stitch edge. If you do not allow extra, the book may not fit in the cover.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/funda-libro-diy-600x344.jpg?resize=600%2C344&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"funda libro diy\" class=\"wp-image-7220\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Do you have the book cover done already!
