I am fascinated by the fact that an awesome <strong>diamond print design<\/strong> can be created with a single ball of yarn. However, did you know that you can also crochet different print patterns if you understand how the colour repetition works? Interestingly, you can create totally distinct patterns by experimenting with different stitches, hook sizes and colour sequences. In the <strong>Planned Colour Pooling Tutorial,<\/strong> I show you how to do this. I also want to show you how to crochet a youthful <em>beanie<\/em> using the ideal colour combination for this project.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9189\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/wollwunder-planned-color-pooling-crochet-beanie-pattern.jpg?resize=1020%2C1360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Planned Colour Pooling Tutorial\" width=\"1020\" height=\"1360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HwQJSZzNxUI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Planned Colour Pooling Tutorial<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>By Denise Karg &#8211; Fr\u00e4uleinWollwunder<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials. <\/strong>1 ball of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/yarns-autumn-winter-magicdiamondsflash-1170.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Katia Magic Diamonds Flash<\/a> col. 100, size 7 (U.S.)\/(4.5 mm) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/needles-hooks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crochet hook<\/a>, pom pom (optional), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/needles-hooks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wool sewing needle<\/a> and scissors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to follow the work. <\/strong><em>Planned pooling<\/em> works because each repetition has exactly the same colour cycle. Therefore, it is very important to maintain the same stitch<strong> tension<\/strong> throughout the work. This beanie is worked in rows of <em>back and forth<\/em> <strong>double crochet<\/strong>. Magic Diamonds Flash comes in 4 colours: therefore you must work exactly 5 double crochet in each colour section. If you only work 4 double crochet, your tension is too loose and you must tighten it. Conversely, if you work 6 double crochet in each colour, your stitch tension is too tight. In either case, you only need to undo the last 5 stitches and repeat using the correct tension.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: 1 colour cycle = 4 colours x 5 dc in each colour = 20 dc<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9194\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/wollwunder-planned-color-pooling-crochet-beanie-pattern-SLIDE.jpg?resize=1020%2C391&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\" crochet hat with only 1 ball of yarn\" width=\"1020\" height=\"391\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Abbreviations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ch st = Chain st<\/li>\n<li>Dc = Double crochet<\/li>\n<li>R(s) = Row(s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Instructions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Work 75 ch sts + 2 ch sts to raise the work up.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: The first dc must be worked in a new colour. If not, after completing the 75+2 ch sts, work in ch st until the next colour change. The additional <strong>chain sts<\/strong> are not worked. Unravel these chain sts and finish off the loose ends of yarn later on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R1:<\/strong> 75 dc \u2192 [4x 5 dc (= 1 Colour Cycle) + 4x 5 dc + 4x 5 dc + only 3x 5 dc] &#8211; 2 ch sts, turn work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TIP<\/strong>: turn the work without 2 ch sts at the end and work the first dc straight away to make a neat edge and not to &#8220;loose&#8221; yarn in this colour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R2-R20:<\/strong> 75 dc \u2192 The blocks of 5 dc in the first two colours form a diagonal line of coloured &#8220;steps&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Finish with a <strong>slip stitch<\/strong> and cut the yarn leaving a long length to sew with.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9190\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/wollwunder-planned-color-pooling-crochet-beanie-pattern-1.jpg?resize=839%2C1201&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"how to crochet planned pooling\" width=\"839\" height=\"1201\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Join together the shorter sides and sew. The colours are displaced in diagonal &#8220;colour steps&#8221;. The <strong>seam<\/strong> will be at the centre back of the hat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9191\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/wollwunder-planned-color-pooling-crochet-beanie-pattern-2.jpg?resize=839%2C1222&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\" crochet hat with only 1 ball of yarn\" width=\"839\" height=\"1222\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, close the upper edge in a <em>star<\/em> form (see the <strong>step by step<\/strong> photos to follow). Insert the sewing needle in the centre from one side to the other and pull the yarn as firmly as possible. Next, always insert the needle from one stitch to the other, just in front, until the hat is firmly closed.
