This is a really easy project, that the kids are going to go crazy about, for such a special and terrifying occasion. Furthermore, they are going to have a monstrously fun night with it. Get your sewing equipment and materials ready we\u2019re going to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7700\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Cesta-halloween-slider-600x228.jpg?resize=600%2C228&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket\" width=\"600\" height=\"228\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">How to sew a dinosaur basket\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">To make this original project we\u2019ve chosen the cheerful and charming print fabrics from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/fabrics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prehistoric collection<\/a>. The one in the mustard colour is a cotton poplin, and the one with the prehistoric birds is a sweat\/fleece fabric. To give the basket some form we\u2019ve used a stabilising foam, but you can use wadding or felt instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7686\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-1-600x368.jpg?resize=600%2C368&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket materials\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Materials:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">Patterns<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\"> (for measurements, see below)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">11 3\/4&#8243; (30cm) of Fabric A: <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/fabric-prehistoric-landscape-sweat-fabric-2106-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Prehistoric Landscape\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and 11 3\/4&#8243; (30cm) of Fabric B: <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katia.com\/EN\/fabric-prehistoric-coord-poplin-fabric-2101-8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Prehistoric Coord<\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">. It is important that the fabrics are washed and ironed before starting to work with them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">11 3\/4&#8243; (30 cm) of stabilising foam, fine wadding or felt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">Sewing thread<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\"> in the same colour as the fabrics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Equipment:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Scissors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Pins\/ small tweezers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Measuring tape<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Fabric marker\/tailor\u2019s chalk<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Thread cutter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Iron<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Fabric scissors and paper scissors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Sewing machine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Ruler, paper and pencil<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7687\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-2-corte-600x450.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket cut\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">The first thing you must do is to transfer the measurements onto paper to prepare the pattern pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Fabric A:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">2 rectangles: 10 5\/8\u201dwide x 9 7\/8\u201d high (27 cm x 25 cm). Main pattern.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Spike patterns: Bag: 8 triangles with 2 3\/4&#8243; (7cm) sides for the bag. Tail: 6 triangles with the following measurements for the sides of each spike: 2\u201d- 2 1\/4&#8243; \u2013 2 3\/8\u201d- 2 5\/8\u201d- 2 3\/4&#8243; \u2013 3\u201d (5cm-5,5cm-6cm-6,5cm-7cm-7,5cm) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Fabric B:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">2 rectangles: 10 5\/8\u201dwide x 9 7\/8\u201d high (27 cm x 25 cm). Main pattern.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">1 rectangle: 5 1\/8\u201dx 18 1\/8\u201d (13 cm x 46 cm). Handle pattern.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Tail pattern: 11 3\/4&#8243; long x 5 1\/2&#8243; high x 13 3\/8\u201d diagonal (30 cm x 14cm x 34 cm)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Foam, wadding or felt:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">2 rectangles: 10 5\/8\u201d wide x 9 7\/8\u201d high (27 cm x 25 cm). Main pattern.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">1 rectangle: 5 1\/8\u201dx 18 1\/8\u201d (13 cm x 46 cm). Handle pattern.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Spike patterns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Once the pattern pieces are ready, cut the pieces out in the corresponding fabrics. The 0.5 cm seam allowances are already included in the pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Spike patterns<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">In the case of the spikes, place them on top of the foam\/wadding\/felt and sew in this way to make the best use of the fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7688\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-3-600x450.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket spikes\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Once sewn, cut them out one by one, trim the corners and turn out to the right side. Press the pieces flat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7689\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-4-600x414.jpg?resize=600%2C414&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket spikes\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Tail<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Position the spikes from small to large, pin in place and sew along the edge with a 0.5 cm seam allowance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7690\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-5-600x370.jpg?resize=600%2C370&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket tail\" width=\"600\" height=\"370\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Next, match both tail piece together, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other, pin in place and sew along the two long sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7691\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-6-600x348.jpg?resize=600%2C348&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket tail\" width=\"600\" height=\"348\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Trim the seam corners and turn out to the right side. You can use polyester stuffing or kapok to fill the tail, or you can recycle all the left over pieces of fabric like we have done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7692\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-7-600x386.jpg?resize=600%2C386&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket filling\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Handle<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">To make the handle, fold the strip in half with the right sides of the fabric facing together and sew along the long edge to join. Turn out to the right side and insert the piece of foam\/wadding\/felt then work rows of parallel top stitching as shown in the photo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7693\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-8-600x332.jpg?resize=600%2C332&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket handle\" width=\"600\" height=\"332\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Making the bag<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Continue with the bag: place the foam\/wadding\/felt underneath the main fabric piece A. Pin the 4 spikes along the upper edge of fabric piece A and sew. Next, match fabric A to fabric B with the right sides facing together and sew along the upper edge again. Open out and iron. Repeat the same process for the other side of the basket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7694\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-9-600x450.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket bag\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Pin the tail at a distance of 2 3\/8\u201d (6 cm) from the upper seam and sew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7695\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-10-600x419.jpg?resize=600%2C419&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket bag\" width=\"600\" height=\"419\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Match both pieces together with the right sides of the fabrics facing each other, taking care at the seam joins. Pin in place and leave a 3 1\/8\u201d (8 cm) opening along the lower edge of the lining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7696\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-11-600x450.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket bag\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Now make the 4 corners: flatten the seams and sew a row of stitching approximately 3 1\/2&#8243; (9 cm) long, as indicated by the dotted line in the photo. Securely fasten off the start and finish of the sewing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7697\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-12-600x375.jpg?resize=600%2C375&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket corners\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Turn the bag out to the right side through the opening. Press and sew the opening shut using the sewing machine or by hand using an invisible seaming stitch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7698\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.katia.com\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cesta-dinosaurio-13-600x450.jpg?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dinosaur candy basket handles\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Place the handle ends at the side seams, folding 1 1\/8\u201d (3 cm) at the lower edges inwards, and pin in place. Sew the handle on, with a rectangle with a cross in the middle, at both sides.
