The video tutorial comes to us from Laura, a fashion lover, especially when it comes to sewing. So much so that at the age of 18 she decided to get the training she was going to need so she could teach you everything she knows.

My name is Laura and I come from Valencia. I have studied pattern making and dressmaking in different schools over a period of 6 years (in Valencia and Barcelona), and I have also taught private sewing classes. I am currently living in Italy. In fact, I had just arrived here when the pandemic started. So for these two reasons I decided to delve into the world of YouTube tutorials as a means of being able to help more people make their own clothing and accessories.

Right now, I am still teaching both individual and group classes here in Italy. I also continue to learn and improve every day, and as a result of this, hope that my tutorials will also help and motivate others to do so as well.

Choosing the fabrics for the jacket

To start, choose the selection of fabrics from Katia Fabrics that you are going to use to make your quilted jacket. Make sure that the fabrics are in different colours, designs and textures in order to create an authentic patchwork look. You can choose from cotton fabrics, denim, jersey or muslin, etc. Any of these fabrics can be used for the jacket to create a fabric with different textures whereby bright and vivid colours are mixed together with softer more delicate tones.

Materials

The measurements that we are going to use to sew the jacket are as follows:

• Fabrics in different colours, textures and prints.
• 59” (150 cm) of wadding for the quilting
• 5 m of bias tape
• Free pattern

• Tailor’s chalk

Recommendations

• It is important that the fabrics are washed and ironed before starting to work with them.
• We recommend you use a size 90/14 universal machine sewing needle to sew with.
• When quilting, work rows of basting to attach the fabric to the wadding so the layers do not move and pockets of air are not created whilst sewing.

Sewing the quilted patchwork jacket

The first thing you need to do when starting to sew this jacket is download and assemble the PDF pattern.

Next, you must cut out the pattern pieces in paper. Once you have cut out the pieces with their corresponding notches and pattern markings, you can start the making up process.

Making the patchwork fabric

1. Cut out squares of fabric measuring 2 3/4 x 2 3/4” (7 x 7 cm). Once sewn they will measure 2” x 2” (5 x 5 cm).
2. Start to sew the squares together: Sew the squares together in pairs, with the right sides of the fabric facing together, and iron the seams open.
3. When all the pairs are completed, join them together in pairs, with the right sides facing, to make a larger square. Also iron this seam open.
4. When we have all the squares, join them in the same manner. First, at the side to form a long strip, and then join the strips to form the final fabric.
5. Next, check that all the pattern pieces fit on the fabric, and before cutting them out, quilt the fabric as you wish, creating vertical or horizontal lines or diamonds, etc.

Step-by-step sewing instructions for the jacket

1. Once the fabric has been quilted, cut out the pattern pieces in both the main fabric and the lining.
2. Join the front and back together, with the right sides facing, and sew the side seams and the shoulder seams. Iron all the seams open.
3. Close the sleeves, with the right sides of the fabric facing together, and sew the straight part. Iron the seams open.
4. Sew the sleeve head to the armholes on the body.
5. Repeat the same steps with the lining.
6. Insert the jacket lining inside the outer jacket (including the sleeves) matching the edges together.
7. Join the two fabric layers with a bias tape around the whole jacket edge.
8. To finish, choose the manner in which you want to fasten the jacket: buttons, snap fasteners or eyelets with a bias tape tie for example.
