Macramé Feather Video Tutorial

Measurements

• Width: 14 cm
• Length: 23 cm

Depending on the length of the fringe you want to add to your feather, the size varies slightly. On my piece, the fringe is around 6 cm long. The final measurements are 23 cm long, from the ring to lower tip of the feather. And 14 cm wide, across the widest part of the feather.

Materials

• Katia Macramé Cord Fine color 200 (white): 1 bobbin
• Wooden ring, 4-5 cm in diameter
• Tape measure
• Scissors
• Comb
• Hairspray (optional)
• Adhesive tape (optional)

Which cord should you use?

For this project, I use Katia Macrame Cord Fine in white, which is about 2 mm thick. But you can also use Katia Macramé Cord, which is thicker, about 3 mm, to make a larger feather. It’s important to use this kind of material since, because it is plied cord specifically for macramé projects, we can easily comb it out.

Knots and techniques

• Lark’s head knot, Square knot & Vertical lark’s head knot
• Combing: loosening the plies to make the fringe

Step-by-step tutorial

Notes: cut 4 cords measuring 1.60 m and 24 cords measuring 20 cm.

• You can replace the wooden ring with a wooden bar and a cord tied around it.
• To keep the ends of the cords from fraying, wrap them with adhesive tape.

Step 1: Placing the cords

Fold the 4 cords measuring 1.60 m in half and place them on the ring using a lark’s head knot.

You have 8 cords to work with.

Step 2: Diamonds

Make a square knot with the 4 center cords, leaving 2 cords loose on each side.

Work a diagonal row of vertical lark’s head knot, from the center towards the right. Use the right center cord as a guide and the 3 right-hand cords to tie the knots.

Repeat towards the left.

Make a double square knot in the center of the diamond. Double the cords to tie the knots and use 2 center cords as a guide.

Work a diagonal row of vertical lark’s head knot, from the right towards the center. Use the far-right cord as a guide. This is the same guide cord as the previous rows of vertical lark’s head knots. Repeat on the left side to close the diamond.

Make 2 more diamonds: repeat the previous process, ending with a square knot.

Cut the cords leaving around 6-7 cm from the last knot.

Step 3: Fringe

Prepare the 24 cords measuring 20 cm each.

Fold each cord in half and tie with a lark’s head knot to the loops on the sides of the center pattern.

There are 3 groups of 4 knots on each side of the project in total.

Comb the cords until they loosen.

Cut the fringe following the rounded shape of a feather.

Finishes

Optionally, you can spray the fringe in place with some hairspray.
