Sewing classes: Learn how to make a French seam
It’s the turn of the French seam in our sewing classes. A technique to join pieces together that doesn’t require the fabric edges to be neatened with a zigzag stitch. With this method you can sew neat and polished seams. It is a technique that is often used for fine fabrics, like our poplins, and infant clothing.
This way we avoid direct contact of the seam with the skin in garments such as blouses or dresses.
To do this type of sewing you will need two left over pieces of fabric, pins, fabric scissors and a sewing machine. We have chosen this cute poplin fabric from the North scape collection.
French Seam
1. Match the two pieces of fabric together with the wrong sides facing each other, pin the seam and sew at a distance of 0.5 cm from the edge, reinforcing the start and finish.
2. Trim half of the width of the seam allowance.
3. After trimming the seam, open out the two pieces and iron on each side.
4. Fold the fabric pieces together again, but this time with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Pin in place.
5. Sew the seam at a distance of 0.5 cm from the edge, reinforcing the start and finish.
6. Open out the fabric pieces and iron on each side. Our French seam is done!
In this way the seam is totally concealed and no edge finishing is required. This is an ideal technique for infant, baby or women’s clothing. The only thing left now is for you to put it into practice!
