Learn ebony stitch because Lisallu has done it again… she´s designed another beautiful knit jumper. And, once again, she´s sharing the complete pattern to knit her Ébène Jumper. It´s true! We love her designs for lots of different reasons. For both her choice of colour as well as the yarns she uses for her elegant jumpers. For example, for her first Craft Lovers design she knitted the Érable jumper using Katia Merino 100% in a fashionable earth brown colour. This time, she´s gone for the infallible colour black in Katia Merino Super-Sport. There´s no doubt that this is a very comfortable woman´s knit jumper which is ideal for everyday use. But, first and foremost, it stands out for the use of a very unique stitch which creates beautiful simple textures. Therefore, for all these reasons, learn ebony stitch now!

Materials: 12/13/14/15 balls Katia Merino Super-Sport. Knitting needles sizes 10 & 10 ¾ (U.S.)/(6 & 7 mm)
Tension Gauge using size 10 ¾ needles in ebony stitch: 20 sts x 32 rows = 5 7/8 x 5 7/8” (15 x 15 cm).
Stitches:
- 1×1 ribbing
- Ebony st. Repeat the following 4 rows:
R1: * K2, P2 *, repeat from * to *
R2: Work all sts as they present themselves
R3: * P2, K2 *, repeat from * to *
R4: Work all sts as they present themselves.
Front
Using size 10 needles cast on 54/58/62/66 sts and work 8 rows in 1×1 ribbing = 1 5/8” (4cm of rib). Change to size 10 ¾ needles and work 70/72/74/76 rows in Ebony st = 13” / 13 3/8” / 13 ¾” / 14 1/8” (33/34/35/36cm) in length measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing.
On row no. 71 / 73 / 75 / 77, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, start to decrease the armholes at each edge of every 2nd row (= for all sizes) as follows: 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 2 times. The armhole decreases finish on row no. 78 / 80 / 82 / 84 counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing. Total: 42 /46 / 50 / 54 sts.
Continue working straight until row no. 86 / 90 / 92 / 96, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing = 15 3/4” / 16 1/2” / 16 7/8” / 17 3/4” (40 / 42 / 43 / 45 cm) in length measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing.
On row no. 87 / 91 / 93 / 97 bind (cast off) the 8 / 8 / 10 / 10 central sts for the neckline and continue working each side separately, binding (casting off) at the neckline edge as follows:
Size XS
Every 2 rows: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 3 times, then every 4 rows: 1 st 2 times. Continue working straight until row no. 106.
Size S
Every 2 rows: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 3 times, then every 4 rows: 1 st 2 times. Continue working straight until row no. 110.
Size M
Every 2 rows: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 3 times, then every 4 rows: 1 st 2 times. Continue working straight until row no. 114.
Size L
Every 2 rows: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 3 times, then every 4 rows: 1 st 2 times. Continue working straight until row no. 118.
On row no. 107 / 111 / 115 / 119, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing = 19 5/8” / 20 1/2” / 20 7/8” / 21 5/8” ( 50 / 52 / 53 / 55 cm) in length measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, bind (cast off) the 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 sts of each shoulder.
Back
Using size 10 needles cast on 54 / 58 / 62 / 66 sts and work 8 rows in 1×1 ribbing = 1 5/8” (4 cm of rib). Change to size 10 ¾ needles and work 70 / 72 / 74 / 76 rows in Ebony st = 13” / 13 3/8” / 13 ¾” / 14 1/8” (33 / 34 / 35 / 36 cm) in length measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing.
On row no. 71 / 73 / 75 / 77, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, start to decrease the armholes at each edge of every 2nd row (= for all sizes) as follows: 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 2 times. On row no. 99 / 103 / 107 / 111, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, bind (cast off) the central 14 / 14 / 16 / 16 sts and continue working each side separately, binding (casting off) at the neckline edge as follows:
Sizes XS & S
Every 2 rows: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 1 time.
Sizes M & L
Every 2 rows: 3 sts 2 times, 1 st 1 time.
On row no. 107 / 111 / 115 / 119 counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing = 19 5/8” / 20 1/2” / 20 7/8” / 21 5/8” (50 / 52 / 54 / 56 cm) measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, bind (cast off) the 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 sts of each shoulder.
Sleeve
Using size 10 needles cast on 30 / 32 / 34 / 36 sts and work 8 rows in 1×1 ribbing = 1 5/8” (4 cm of rib).
Change to size 10 3/4″ and work in Ebony st as follows:
Size XS
10 rows, then increase at each edge (= 1 st in from the edges) as follows: 1 st 8 times on every 10th row. Continue working straight until row no. 90 = 16 1/2″ (42 cm) measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing Total: 46 sts.
Size S
10 rows, then increase at each edge (= 1 st in from the edges) as follows: 1 st 8 times on every 10th row. Continue working straight until row no. 92 = 16 7/8″ (43 cm) measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing Total: 48 sts.
Size M
10 rows, then increase at each edge (= 1 st in from the edges) as follows: 1 st 7 times on every 10th row then 1 st 1 time on the next 12th row. Continue working straight until row no. 94 = 17 3/8″ (44 cm) measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing. Total: 50 sts.
Size L
6 rows, then increase at each edge (= 1 st in from the edges) as follows: 1 st 9 times on every 10th row. Continue working straight until row no. 96 = 17 3/4″ (45 cm) measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing. Total: 54 sts.
On row no. 91 / 93 / 95 / 97, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, form the sleeve head by decreasing at each edge every 2 rows (for all sizes) as follows: 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 2 times.
The decreases for the sleeve head finish on row no. 98 / 100 / 102 / 104, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing = 18 1/8” / 18 1/2” / 18 7/8” / 19 1/4″ (46 / 47 / 48 / 49 cm) measuring from the end of the 1×1 ribbing.
On row no. 99 / 101 / 103 / 105, counting from the end of the 1×1 ribbing, bind (cast off) the remaining 34 / 36 / 38 / 42 sts.
Finishing & making up
Sew the shoulders and the sides of the front to the back. Close the sleeves and sew them to the body of the jumper.
Collar finishing: Using size 10 needles pick up all the sts around the collar and work 8 rows in ribbing then loosely bind (cast off) all the sts. And that´s it!
