Taina Lace Knit Shawl

Valentina is sharing the step by step instructions for knitting this beautiful lace knit shawl with only one ball of Silk Degradé from the Katia Concept range. The classical triangular shawl shape, with a diamond repeat pattern, also features a border edge with a series of romantic floral bouquet motifs. Furthermore, the long cycle colour process used to dye the Silk Degradé yarn guarantees a fantastic gradient colour effect. Accordingly, the beauty and softness of the cotton, silk and viscose significantly help to ensure that this project turns into an extraordinary experience. MATERIALS: 1 ball of Katia Silk Degradé col. 300, 3 mm/USA 4 circular needles, 100 cm/40 inch size needed to obtain gauge; 4 markers, cable needles, tapestry needle or crochet hook to weave in ends.

MEASUREMENTS: 71 cm/28“ deep, 169 cm/66.5“ wide

ABBREVIATIONS

• 2/2 RC – two over two Right Cross: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold at back, k2; k2 from cable needle
• 2/2 LC – two over two Left Cross: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold at front, k2; k2 from cable needle
• 3/4 RC – three over four Right Cross: slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold at back, k3; k4 from cable needle
• 3/4 LC – three over four Left Cross: slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold at front, k4; k3 from cable needle
• CO – cast on
• CSt – central stitch (RS: knit below (insert tip of right needle from front to back into centre of st directly below first st on left needle and knit); WS: p)
• GSt – Garter stitch
• k – knit
• k2tog – knit 2 sts together
• k3tog – knit 3 sts together

• ssk – slip-slip-knit: slip the next 2 sts, one by one, knitwise; insert the tip of the left needle, from left to right, into the fronts of those 2 sts and knit them together (1 st decreased)

• YO – yarn over

GAUGE: 19 sts/30 rows = 10 cm/4” square in St st on 3 mm needles after blocking

INSTRUCTIONS

1) Set-up

Garter tab cast on: cast on 3 stitches with a provisional cast on method of your choice and knit six rows in garter stitch.

Row 1 (RS): without turning your work after the last row of garter tab, PM, pick up and k 3 sts (1 st from each garter rib), PM, k3 from provisional cast on. Now you have 9 sts on the needle: 3 edge sts on each side which will be worked in GSt and 3 body sts, of which the middle one is CSt.

R2 (WS): k3, SLM, p1, PM, CSt, PM, p1, SLM, k3.
R3 (RS): k3, SLM, YO, k to next M, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, k to last M, YO, SLM, k3 (4 sts increased).

R4 (WS): k3, SLM, p to next M, SLM, CSt, SLM, p to next M, SLM, k3.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 three more times until you have 25 sts on the needles.

2) Lace Section

Row 1 (RS): k3, SLM, YO,  k1, 3/4 LC, k1, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, k1, 3/4 RC, k1, YO, SLM, k3.

R2 (WS): k3, SLM, p to next M, SLM, CSt, SLM, p to next M, SLM, k3.

R3: k3, SLM, YO, k to next M, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, k to next M, YO, SLM, k3.

R4: rep Row 2.

Row 5 and all odd numbered rows: k3, *SLM, work stitches before first arrow, work pattern repeat (see red line in chart) **x times, work stitches after second arrow, SLM*, CSt, rep between * *, k3.

NOTE: The chart only shows odd-numbered (RS) rows. In even-numbered rows, work sts as they appear and YO: purl. The increased sts on the sides and in the center of the shawl will be incorporated into the lace pattern and additional repeats of the chart repeat will be added in subsequent rows (see table). The edge sts (3 knit sts) are not shown in the chart. Read chart from right to left.

R2 (RS): k3, SLM, YO, k to M, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, k to M, YO, SLM, k3 (4 sts increased, 325 sts).

R3: rep Row 1.

R4: k3, SLM, YO, k1, *YO, k2tog, rep from * to M, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, k1, *YO, k2tog, rep from * to M, YO, SLM, k3 (4 sts increased, 329 sts).

Rows 5 to 8: rep Rows 1 and 2 twice.

R9: rep Row 1.

337 sts on the needles.

4) Bouquets

Row 1 (RS): k3, SLM, YO, p2, *k1, p15, rep from * to 3 sts before M, k1, p2, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, p2, *k1, p15, rep from * to 3 sts before M, k1, p2, YO, SLM, k3 (4 sts increased, 341 sts).

Row 2 (WS): k3, SLM, k3, *p1, k15, rep from * to 4 sts before M, p1, k3, SLM, CSt, SLM, k3, *p1, k15, rep from * to 4 sts before M, p1, k3, SLM, k3.

Now you start working from the Cable Chart 2 below:

Row 3: k3, *SLM, work stitches before arrow, work repeat of 16 sts 10 times, then the stitches after arrow*, SLM, CSt, rep between * *, k3.

Row 4 and all even rows: k3, SLM, work sts as they appear to M, SLM, CSt, SLM, work sts as they appear to M, SLM, k3.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 a further 11 times (48 sts increased, 389 sts).

Note: Read chart from right to left.

Row 25 (RS): k3, SLM, YO, p to M, YO, SLM, CSt, SLM, YO, p to M, YO, SLM, k3 (4 sts increased, 393 sts).

5) Garter Section and Eyelets

Rep Section 3 (16 sts increased, 409 sts).

NOTE: If you have enough yarn left, you can work an additional couple of rows in Garter Stitch. If you don’t have enough yarn, you can skip the last section.

Bind off, weave in ends and block to measurements. Attach tassels if desired.
