How to sew a headband in less than 15 minutes

Materials:

• Fabrics: Poplin or summer sweat fabric
• Sewing thread in the same colour as the fabric
• Scissors
• Measuring tape
• Pins
• You will need 15 mm wide elastic for the headband made in the poplin fabric

Sew these attractive turbans for yourself or as gifts for others. You can make various headbands in one afternoon because this project is so easy and fast to do. Now, let’s get going! Follow these steps:

Headband made with the elastic jersey type fabric

Level: Beginner

One size: Measurements: 5 1/8” (13 cm) wide x 19 5/8” (50 cm) long. These measurements are for a head circumference of 19 5/8” (50 cm).

The first idea is the easiest of all. You only need 1 rectangle of elastic fabric, like our summer fleece or knitted jersey T-shirt fabric for example.

1. Cut one rectangular piece of the elastic fabric with the required measurements, following the contour of the head = 5 1/8” x 19 5/8” (8 cm x 50 cm).
2. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the right sides of the fabric facing together on the inside. Make sure that the edges are level and sew to form a tube.
3. Turn the band out to the right side so the right side of the fabric is on the outside.
4. Give the fabric strip a good iron.
5. Join the ends of the rectangle as shown in the video, making a kind of sandwich to form the crossover of the headband.
6. Sew the two ends together. Turn out to the right side, leaving the seam facing downwards. You have now finished your first turban.

Headband made with the poplin or a non-elastic fabric

Level: Beginner

One size: Measurements: 2 rectangles: 15 3/4” (40 cm) long x 4 3/4” (12 cm) wide and 1 small rectangle: 11 3/4″ (30 cm) x 2 3/4″ (7 cm). This measurement is for a girl’s head circumference of 19 5/8” (50 cm).

In this case, in addition to the fabric, we also need 5 7/8” (15 cm) of 15 mm wide elastic.

1. Cut the rectangular pieces of fabric out with the required measurements. Keeping in mind that you will need a little more fabric for the seam allowances.

2. Fold the 3 rectangles in half lengthways so the right sides of the fabrics are facing together.
3. Pin the long open edges closed so the fabric doesn’t move and sew a row of straight stitching along the pinned edge to form a tube.
4. Turn the tubes out to the right side so the right side of the fabric is on the outside.
5. Next, iron the fabric tubes so they are nice and flat with the seam in the middle, and without any creases.
6. Insert the elastic inside the small rectangle. Sew the ends, with the elastic secured at each end so it doesn’t move.
7. When the three pieces that make up the headband are ready, take one and fold it in half with the right sides facing together, then take the other piece and introduce it inside the first to form the crossover.

Sewing on the strip to adjust the headband

1. To finish, the piece with the elastic inside is attached so the turban can be adjusted to fit the head. To do this, take the ends of one of the large rectangles with the seams facing inwards, and place the small rectangle on top. Bring what is leftover at one side to the centre and do the same with the other side.
2. Pin in place and work a row of straight stitching at a distance of 3/4″ (2 cm) from the edge. Repeat the same process at the other side of the headband.
3. Turn the piece so the seam is on the inside. Now your second headband is ready.
