Step-by-step instructions for making an apron

To make the apron, first you’ll need to download and piece together the PDF pattern and carefully read the instructions.

Next, cut the paper patterns. Here’s a post where we explain How to trace and cut patterns in case it is helpful. Once you have cut out the pieces with their corresponding notches, move onto making the apron.

  1. First, make the apron front pockets. Iron the top hem and fasten with backstitch. Next, iron the side seams and the bottom hem.
  2. Sew the pockets to the apron, backstitching around the edge of the pocket. On the bottom pocket, make a vertical backstitch to divide the pocket in half.

Making the apron strings:

  1. Fold neck straps lengthways with right sides facing each other. Backstitch along the side, leaving one end loose. Turn the strap right side out.
  2. Fold the waist straps in four parts, iron and backstitch along the side.
  3. Make a double hem around the armholes of the apron. Fasten the side of the hem with backstitch.
  4. Make a double folded hem on the sides and the bottom of the hem. Fasten the side of the hem with backstitch.
  5. Sew the waist straps to the sides of the apron.
  6. Pass the short end of the top strap through the karabiner. Join the ends of the strap with backstitch.
  7. Hem the top of the apron. Sew the neck straps. And done!

Tutorial to make an adjustable chef’s hat

Use the step-by-step video tutorial to make this chef’s hat for children 3 to 8 years, although the hat can be easily adjusted to fit any head. In no time you’ll have this wonderfully unique chef costume ready to wear.

  1. Cut a 50 cm by 50 cm square. Fold in half, then in half again, you’ll make a smaller square. On this square, trace 1/4 of a circumference. Cut along the outline and this is the top of the hat.
  2. Make a cut 10 cm from the edge to make an opening.
  3. Along the entire edge, make notches 3 cm apart to make the folds of the hat.
  4. Make the folds by joining the notches together. Fasten with a straight stitch.
  5. Sew the bias to the opening or make a double hem for a polished look.
  6. Cut a strip that is 12 cm wide by 62 cm long.
  7. Fold in half with right sides facing each other and sew the two ends, starting 1 cm from the bottom edge. Do not start sewing right at the edge.
  8. Turn the strip inside out.
  9. Gather the top of the hat to fit the strap.
  10. From the opening, face the top of the hat with this strip you’ve just made, pin into place to sew with straight stitch.
  11. Turn inside out and push the seam inwards. Work a straight stitch along the right side of the join between the hat pieces.
  12. Sew or glue Velcro to be able to adjust the size of the hat.
