Atlántico Shawl Video tutorial 

This shawl is inspired by the Atlantic, an ocean of cold waters and strong currents. The Atlántico Shawl is very easy to knit, with an original half moon or crescent shape. In addition, the 3 rows of increases across the body of the shawl carry the gaze to the ocean shores. In the following Atlántico Shawl video tutorial I will show you the first section inspired by the amplitude of the ocean. Then, the second section inspired by the sea shore and the beach. To finish, I have added vertical waves along the shawl´s border as if they were the water’s edge reaching the sea shore.

How to knit a crescent shawl

Materials: 4 balls of Katia Veganette col. 107, size 7 (U.S.)/(4.5mm) circular knitting needles with a 32” (80 cm) long cable, 2 stitch markers, scissors and wool sewing needle.

Gauge. Using the size 7 needles in stockinette st: 16.5 sts x 25 rows = 4×4”

Measurements

• Length: 74 3/4″ (190 cm)
• Width: 18 1/2″ (47 cm)

• K2tog – knit 2 together
• K2togtbl– knit 2 together through back of loop
• RS – right side of work
• slm – slip stitch marker
• dec – decrease or single decrease

Notes

The shawl consists of 2 sections:

• Section 1: ocean
• Section 2: seashore

Knit this crescent shawl in rows going back and forth. At the start of each section, check if it starts with a RS row or a WS side row. For section 1: slm whilst working the rows where it is not expressly stated.

Start

Garter st lapel: cast on 3 sts. Work 6 rows in knit st, turn work 90º and pick up and work 3 knit sts along the left side, turn work 90º and pick up and work 3 knit sts along the cast on edge (9 sts).

R1(WS): k3, yo, p3, yo, k3 (11 sts).

R2(RS): k3, yo, k2, pm, k1, pm, k2, yo, k3 (13 sts).

R3(WS): k3, yo, p until last 3 sts, yo, k3. Slm at same time (15 sts).

Section 1: Ocean

Set up row (RS): k3, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, slm, k1, slm, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k3.

R1(WS): k3, yo, p until last 3 sts, yo, k3.

R2: k3, yo, knit until last 3 sts, yo, k3.

R3: rep R1.

R4: k3, yo, work in knit until middle of section, yo, knit to stitch marker, yo, slm, k1, slm, yo, knit until middle of section, yo, knit until last 3 sts, yo, k3. (See video)

Rep R1-R4 finishing on a R3 until a total of 279 sts.

Section 2: Seashore

R1(RS): k3, yo, k4, *dec, k2, yo, k2*, rep from * to * until there are 8 sts left, k5, yo, k3. Remove the stitch markers at the same time.

R2 and all other even rows until R28(WS): k3, yo, purl until last 3 sts, yo, k3.

R3: k3, yo, k6, *dec, k2, yo, k2*, rep until there are 4 sts left, k1, yo, k3.

R5: k3, yo, k2, *dec, k2, yo, k2*, rep until there are 6 sts, K3, yo, k3.

R7: k3, yo, k3, *k2tog, k2, yo, k2*, rep until there are 3 sts, yo, k3.

R30: k3, purl until last 3 sts, k3.

Ribbed cast off

k2, return these sts back onto the LH needle, k2togtbl, *k1, return 2 sts back onto the LH needle, k2togtbl *, rep from * to * until all the sts have been cast off.

Finishing

Weave in the loose ends of yarn and block the shawl.
