Making Up

Before starting, wash and iron the fabrics. You will need to cut out 2 fabric hearts for each coaster. The seam allowances are included in the pattern pieces.

Frayed Coasters

  1. Cut out 2 pieces in the solid colour fabric using the heart shaped coaster pattern.
  2. Place the 2 heart pieces together with the wrong sides facing together. Pin in place so they do not move.
  3. Work a row of stitching around the heart shape at a distance of 3/8” (1 cm) in from the edge. A contrast colour sewing thread to the fabric can be used if desired.
  4. To finish, unravel and fray the edges. You have now completed the first coaster option.

Double stitched fabric coasters

  1. Cut out 2 pieces in the fabric using the heart shaped coaster pattern.
  2. Place the 2 pieces together, with the right sides facing together, and sew around the edges. Leave an opening, measuring a few centimetres wide, unsewn to turn the coaster out to the right side.
  3. Next, turn the coaster out to the right side and give it a good press.
  4. To finish, use a twin needle to stitch around the edges of the heart on the right side of the work.
