Craft Lovers has been launched! Thanks to the talented Isabelle, and her passion for needlework and knitted fashion, who shares her creations on the inspirational blog Lisallu. We recommend that you take a look at the numerous garments she has made by hand and discover the interesting proposals that Isabelle shares and incorporates within her outfits on her blog, Instagram and Facebook.

For example: a button… well, in this case more than one, in fact all the ones that form part of this beautiful knitted jumper with back button fastening. Lisallu has knitted this garment, with a marvellous texture of tiny Maple leaves (érable in French, which is where the sweater takes its name from), using Katia Merino 100% in earth brown (col. 61).  We would tell you a thousand more things about what this jumper by Lisallu evokes for us, but obviously, this garment speaks for itself: pure inspiration from Nature that you can now knit by following these given instructions.

Érable jumper pattern designed by Lisallu with Katia Merino 100%

  • Sizes: S / M / L
  • Materials: 10 / 12 / 14 balls of  Katia Merino 100%  61
  • Knitting needles: 4 & 6 (U.S.)/(3.5 & 4 mm)
  • Gauge: using size 6 needles in stockinette st: 4×4” = 23 sts x 30 rows
  • Stitches: 1×1 ribbing and Maple leaf st

The Maple leaf st is worked on a base of stockinette st. To make the small relief st ‘leaf’, work as follows: P3 tog, and without releasing the sts from the needle work the same 3 sts again, this time in knit = K3 tog, and still without releasing the sts from the needle, work them again in purl = P3 tog.

See Maple st graph to follow:

Maple st graph:

v = Knit st on right side or wrong side of work.

ooo = Maple st

Front: Using size 4 needles cast on 104 / 110 / 120 sts and work 10 rows in 1×1 ribbing. Change to size 6 needles and work 104 rows in Maple st (= 13 ¾”/35 cm in length after the ribbing).

Armholes: Bind (cast off) at each edge as beg of every row as follows:

S: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 stitches 2 times, 1 st 3 times.

M: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 2 times, 2 stitches 1 time, 1 st 4 times.

L: 5 sts 1 time, 4 sts 1 time, 3 stitches 1 time, 2 stitches 2 times, 1 st 4 times.

The armhole decreases finish on row 118 120 122.

Total: 76 78 /80 sts.

Neckline: On row 137 139 144, work neckline by binding (casting off) the 14 central sts and cont working each side separately, binding (casting off) on every right side row at neckline edge as follows: 3 stitches 2 times, 2 stitches 2 times, 1 stitch 2 times, and on every 4 row: 1 stitch 3 times.

On row 165 167 171 bind (cast off) the rem 16 17 18 sts at each side to form the shoulders.

Right back: When working the right back, always knit the last 6 sts of the right side rows in knit (to make the button band in garter st).

Evenly space 11 11 12 round buttonholes (= YO and  work 2 sts tog) in the centre of the button band working from 4th / 5th 4th row. Leave 16 16 15 rows between buttonholes. Note: the last buttonhole is worked in the 1×1 ribbing of the collar. (See: making up and finishing Érable jumper).

Using size 4 needles cast on 55 58 63 sts and work 10 rows in 1×1 ribbing (except, as explained before, the last 6 sts which are always worked in garter st).

Using size 6 needles work 104 rows in Maple st (= 13 ¾”/35 cm in length after the ribbing).

Armhole: Bind (cast off) at the opposite edge to the garter st button band as follows:

S: 4 stitches 1 time, 3 stitches 1 time, 2 stitches 2 times, 1 stitch 3 times.

M: 4 stitches 1 time, 3 stitches 2 times, 2 stitches 1 time, 1 stitch 4 times.

L: 5 sts 1 time, 4 sts 1 time, 3 stitches 1 time, 2 stitches 2 times, 1 st 4 times.

The armhole decreases finish on row 118 120 122. Total: 41 / 42 /43 sts.

Neckline. On row 160 162 166, work the neckline by binding (casting off) (for all sizes) the 11 sts at button band edge.

Bind (cast off) 7 sts 2 times at beg of each row at button band edge.

On row 165 167 171 bind (cast off) the rem 16 17 18 sts to form the shoulders.

Left back: Work the left back in the same manner as the right back but reversing the shaping. Do not work buttonholes on the left back button band as the buttons will be sewn onto this button band.

Sleeves: Using size 4 needles cast on 58 62 66 sts and work 10 rows in 1×1 ribbing.

Change to size 6 needles and work in Maple st increasing at each edge (= 2 sts in from the edge) as follows:

S: 1 st 4 times on every 16th row and 1 st 3 times on every 14th row.

M: 1 st 4 times on every 16th row and 1 st 3 times on every 14th row.

L: 1 st 6 times on every 14th row and 1 st 2 times on every 12th row.

Total: 72 76 82 sts.

At row 110 (= 14 1/8” (36 cm) in length from the ribbing), work the sleeve head. Bind (cast off) at each edge at beg of every row as follows:

S: 3 stitches 1 time & 2 stitches 2 times.

M: 3 stitches 1 time & 2 stitches 3 times.

L: 3 stitches 1 time & 2 stitches 4 times.

Cont decreasing at each edge (= 2 sts in from the edge) as follows:

S: 1 st 5 times every 2 rows: 1 st 4 times every 4 rows: 1 st 5 times every 2 rows.

M: 1 st 4 times every 2 rows: 1 st 4 times every 4 rows: 1 st 4 times every 2 rows.

L: 1 st 4 times every 2 rows: 1 st 3 times every 4 rows: 1 st 4 times every 2 rows.

Bind (cast off) at each edge at beg of every row as follows:

S: 2 stitches 2 times & 3 stitches 1 time.

M: 2 stitches 3 times & 3 stitches 1 time.

L: 2 stitches 4 times & 3 stitches 1 time.

Bind (cast off) the rem 16 sts.

Finishing & making up the Érable jumper. Sew shoulders & sides. Sew sleeves. Pick up all the sts around the collar (keeping the same number of sts) and work 10 rows in 1×1 ribbing with size 4 needles, working one buttonhole in the right hand garter st button band (= band which already has buttonholes). Bind (cast off) all sts.
