You are going to fall in love! Botties: how to easily make some really cosy crochet booties using 2 balls of Katia

25 January, 2018

Valentine´s Day is getting near and our love of crochet is growing more and more, especially when we discover exciting projects like Botties. Be prepared because you are going to fall in love with these crochet boots made from  Katia Azteca, and with the story of this young German brand. Behind Botties are Isabelle, a designer from Pforzheim, and her mother Claudine, a craft lover. Since the time when she was a design student, Isabelle has been developing her footwear concept, which became reality in 2017 thanks to her mother´s hobby of crochet.

Now you know why we are in love with these crochet boots, and furthermore, they are a perfect project for Valentine´s Day. That´s why we are sharing how to make these original Botties from only 2 balls of Katia Azteca with you. These comfortable and beautiful crochet boots are easily made thanks to the Botties soles which are available on her website. Lastly, we´d like to encourage you to discover all the proposals from Botties made using our Katia yarns on Facebook and Instagram.

How to crochet your Botties?

1 ball Katia Azteca = booties

2 balls Katia Azteca = boots

Materials: 2 balls Katia Azteca, one size C2 crochet hook, one size J10 crochet hook, one pair of soles with soft inserts and some HÄKELBOTTIES labels.

Botties

Abbreviations

s.c. = single crochet

dec. = decrease

s.s. = slip stitch

Gauge: 14 sts x 16 rows = 4×4”

It is very important to make a tension square so that the Botties are not too tight of too wide. The stitches are worked tightly to achieve a compact fabric.

START

R0 – Using the size C2 crochet hook: Hold the sole with the heel facing you. Insert the crochet hook from the inside to the outside of the central hole on the bottom row. Pass the yarn through the hole. Now insert the crochet hook through the hole on top of the first hole from the outside to the inside; wrap yarn over hook, pass the yarn through the hole and finish working the single crochet.

Repeat this operation for the rest of the heel. Take care not to work the stitches too tightly so that the work can be continued later using the larger size J10 crochet hook. Work all the stitches in the holes beyond the heel in single crochet, close the row with one s.s.

DECREASING

Continue with the size J10 crochet hook.

R1-4: Work each stitch (tightly) in single crochet.

R5: Start the decreases to make the tip of the boot. Mark the centre of the tip (with a marker or a safety-pin). Mark the 12th stitch counting from the centre of the tip towards the left.

Work one s.c. in each stitch until you arrive at the marker. Work the marked stitch and the following stitch together (= dec.). Note: To work the dec., insert the hook in the front loop of each stitch only (you have 2 loops on the crochet hook). Wrap yarn over hook and draw through the two stitches. Mark the s.c. that you have just worked.
Continue working as follows: 2 s.c., dec., 2 s.c., dec., 2 s.c. Work the marked stitch and the following stitch together, place a marker.

Continue working as follows: 2 s.c., dec., 2 s.c., dec., 2 s.c. Work one s.c. in each stitch on the rest of the row.

R6-14: Work one s.c. in each stitch until 4 sts before the tip of the Bottie. Continue as follows: dec., 2 s.c., dec. (= tip), 2 s.c., dec.; work one s.c. in each stitch until the end of the row.

R15: One s.c. in each stitch until you arrive at the tip, dec., one s.c. in each stitch until the end.

LEG SECTION

R16 and all following rows: one s.c. in each stitch. The number of rows to be worked depends:

How high do you want the leg section of your Botties to be? If you want the leg section to be higher, work with two balls of Katia Azteca.

Do you want them to be straight or to be more fitted to the leg? If you want them to be looser at the top, increase one stitch – at the centre of the heel – from R30. Increase one stitch every 5 rows. Finally, 2 rows before arriving at the desired height decrease two stitches.

FINISHING

Close the centre of the heel with one s.s., cut the yarn and fasten off. Fasten off the main yarn by weaving through the sts. at the side. If necessary there are 4 more holes at the heel where you can secure the yarn. To finish, sew the HÄKELBOTTIES labels onto the edge of the leg section.
