10 Sewing tips for beginners

1. Use the correct sewing thread

When sewing on the machine it is very important to employ the correct sewing thread. Make sure that you purchase a good quality thread and use the same colour for the top spool and the bobbin.

2. Basting stitch

Basting (or tacking) may seem tedious and boring. However, this hand sewing technique is sometimes necessary to achieve a better result after sewing the basted section on the machine. Use a special basting thread which can be easily found in haberdashery shops and is very easy to remove.

3. Sewing needle types

One of our most important tips is that you use the correct sewing needle for the type of fabric you are going to sew. Furthermore, ensure that the needle is not damaged in any way. A worn or damaged needle is going to cause you a lot of headaches. You can purchase sewing needles for fine fabrics, stretch fabrics, thick fabrics, leather etc.

4. Use the iron

The iron will become your best ally for each seam that you sew. It may seem like a boring chore, but it is a vital step throughout the sewing process and you will see the difference in your resulting projects.

5. Pins or wonder clips

Use enough pins to secure the seam at the start and the finish, plus additional pins in the middle section as required. They will be a great help, but do not overuse them.

6. Know your sewing machine

Get to know the
capabilities and limitations of your sewing machine. The power and strength of each machine is different and it is important that you are aware of this when starting to sew.
Read the instruction manual and practice the different stitches that your machine can produce.
We recommend that you test trial the type of needle, thread, tensions etc., on a spare piece of the fabric you are going to use before starting to sew any new project.

7. Presser foot

There are a lot of different types of presser feet in addition to the ones that are included with your sewing machine when you buy it. You should be aware of the different types of presser feet available and how to use them. As a result, they will help make certain sewing tasks much easier for you to do.

8. Cleanliness

Your sewing machine needs
maintenance and cleaning from time to time to ensure it keeps in good working condition. The fluff usually becomes trapped in the interior section of the bobbin and the feed dog teeth. Clean and oil, then sew a few rows of stitching on a scrap of waste fabric to avoid staining your next project with oil.
If your machine still isn’t sewing properly, perhaps it is time to take it to an official sewing machine mechanic for a revision. Consult the official sewing machine mechanics for your brand of sewing machines.

9. Dedicate time and a have desire to learn
