TIPS AND TRICKS

KNITTERS TRICKS

BIAS SCARF
K2 tog at the beginning of every right side row and make 1 stitch in the last stitch of the row, (therefore we will always have the same number of stitches on the needle).

To make this technique more eye-catching we recommend working in multi-colour stripes, different yarn combinations or combining rows of stockinette stitch and garter stitch.

TO ACHIEVE A NEAT FINISH AT BAND EDGES
Slip the 1st stitch in the opposite direction to how it presents itself.

TO ENSURE THAT A RIBBED BAND IS NOT UNEVEN/WAY
Ribbed bands can tend to be wavy with excess knit, to avoid this, at every 10th row work 2 rows less across the band stitches.

TO ENSURE THAT A GARTER STITCH BAND DOESN'T SHRINK IN
Garter stitch bands have a tendency to shrink up, to avoid this, at every 10th row work 2 extra rows across the band stitches.

SCARVES IN QUAKER STITCH
To ensure that the edges of a quaker stitch scarf are perfect, work 2 garter stitches at each edge and for the next stitch always start and finish with the same stitch.

QUAKER STITCH
As both sides of this stitch are similar in appearance it is advisable to place a marker at the right side of the work.

BINDING/CASTING OFF COLLAR STITCHES
To ensure that stitches are loose and even, use a needle one size bigger than used for the garment for binding/casting off.

HOW TO PICK UP NECKLINE STITCHES CORRECTLY
Once the stitches have been bound/cast off, pick them up inserting the needle in a single bar/thread of the bound/cast off stitch (lower one). The work will be bulky if both bars/threads are picked up.

TO ENSURE THAT ROUND BUTTONHOLES DON'T STRETCH
Bind/cast off the buttonhole stitches as indicated. On the next row increase 1 stitch less than the stitches bound/cast off. On the next row, make 1 stitch in one of the increased stitches.

TIPS WHEN MAKING EYELET STITCHES
It's very important to use the central stitch of each motif as a guide.

HOW TO LENGTHEN AND SHORTEN PIECES (Sleeves / Front / Back) IN STOCKINETTE STITCH

LENGTHEN
On the 1st stockinette st. row, after the rib st., use a needle to pull the inside horizontal yarn at any point along the row. Cut the yarn and pull until the row is undone.
Pick up the loose stitches (discarding the piece of ribbing) and work the extra length needed finishing with the ribbing.

SHORTEN
Using a needle, pull the inside horizontal yarn at any point along the row (depending on the number of inches/cm. you want to reduce after the ribbing).
Cut the yarn and pull until the row is undone.
Pull out the section of stockinette st to be reduced and the ribbing.
Pick up the loose stitches and work the ribbing.
The garment is now shorter and the required length.
